How much does the shingles vaccine cost in Edinburgh?
At Edinburgh Vaccination Clinic (Bruntsfield Pharmacy), we charge £225 per dose for private shingles vaccination. Because Shingrix is a two-dose vaccine, the full private course costs £450 in total. Both doses are needed to give you the full level of protection.
When reviewing pricing, the full-course cost is the figure to look at, not just the per-dose price. Our pricing is transparent and includes everything you need, from the initial clinical assessment through to your second dose.
Shingles vaccine price in Edinburgh
£225 per dose · £450 for the full two-dose course
Includes your consultation with an Independent Prescriber, suitability check, administration of the Shingrix vaccine, aftercare advice and a written vaccination record.
You pay per dose rather than for the whole course upfront, so there is no large single payment and no risk of paying for a second dose you haven’t had yet. We book your second appointment at the end of your first visit.
Our schedule follows the manufacturer’s licensed interval, with the second dose generally given two months after the first. Where needed, we can give the second dose later, within six months of the first, in line with EMA guidance.
What’s included in the shingles vaccine cost?
When reviewing private shingles vaccine pricing, the headline figure is not always the full amount payable. Some pricing structures charge separately for the clinical consultation or for a vaccination certificate. Our pricing is all-in.
Your shingles vaccination with us includes
- A private consultation with Ather Diab, Independent Prescriber, where we confirm Shingrix is suitable for you
- A full review of your medical history and current medication
- Administration of the Shingrix vaccine by a registered pharmacist
- Your two-dose course planned, booked and tracked on your clinical record
- Post-vaccination observation in the clinic
- A written vaccination record for your own files
- Aftercare advice and a direct line back to us if you have questions
We don’t add booking fees, consultation surcharges or charges for your vaccination record.
Why can shingles vaccine prices vary?
Where Shingrix is used, the vaccine product is the same. Private shingles vaccine pricing can vary depending on what the headline figure covers and how the clinical service around the injection is delivered.
When reviewing private shingles vaccine pricing in Edinburgh, it is worth checking:
What to check when comparing prices
- Whether the consultation is included. Some pricing structures quote a dose price that excludes the prescriber appointment, medical review or vaccination record. Look for the total cost, not the starting-from figure.
- Whether the price is per dose or per course. Shingrix is a two-dose vaccine, so a low per-dose headline can still add up to more than a transparent full-course price.
- Who delivers the clinical assessment. At our clinic, we confirm suitability through an Independent Prescriber before any dose is given. This matters if you take regular medication or have an underlying health condition.
- Vaccine storage and handling. Shingrix has strict cold-chain requirements. We invest in monitored medical refrigeration and pharmacist-led handling protocols to protect the potency of every vial.
- Follow-up, aftercare and records. A properly included second-dose booking, aftercare support and a written vaccination record are part of the course, not optional extras.
Our £450 full-course price at Edinburgh Vaccination Clinic (Bruntsfield Pharmacy) reflects all of the above, delivered by an award-winning pharmacy team.
Can I get the shingles vaccine privately from age 50?
Yes. Shingrix is licensed in the UK for adults aged 50 and over, and from age 18 in people at increased risk of shingles due to immunosuppression.
At Edinburgh Vaccination Clinic (Bruntsfield Pharmacy), we vaccinate adults privately from age 50 in line with the licensed indication. From age 50, you are within the group Shingrix was originally designed for, so vaccination can be considered as soon as the age threshold is reached.
For some adults, private vaccination is the most direct route to protection.
Shingles vaccine private over 50: why patients choose to be protected
Shingles is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you had chickenpox as a child, the virus stays dormant in your nerve tissue for life. As the immune system’s ability to keep it in check declines with age, the virus can reactivate as shingles.
That age-related decline begins well before 65. It is the reason the private licensed age for Shingrix is 50, and it is why many of our patients in their fifties ask about private vaccination.
What shingles can involve
A painful, blistering rash along one side of the body or face, usually preceded by burning or tingling nerve pain. Episodes typically last two to four weeks. In some people, nerve pain continues long after the rash clears. This complication is called post-herpetic neuralgia, and it can last months or even years.
Why shingles risk increases after 50
The immune system changes as you age. One of the most important changes is the gradual weakening of cell-mediated immunity, the part of your immune response that keeps dormant viruses like varicella-zoster suppressed. This process is called immunosenescence, and it accelerates from around age 50.
Stress, illness and certain medications can contribute further. Around one in four adults in the UK will develop shingles in their lifetime, and both the likelihood of developing shingles and the risk of longer-lasting complications increase steadily with age.
Shingrix works by prompting the immune system to recognise the virus, rebuilding the specific defence that has been fading. Shingrix has demonstrated over 90% efficacy against shingles in clinical trials in adults aged 50 and over, with protection sustained across long-term follow-up studies to date.
Who should get the shingles vaccine UK?
We recommend Shingrix for:
Who we recommend Shingrix for
- Adults aged 50 and over who want long-term protection against shingles and its complications
- Adults aged 18 and over with a weakened immune system, including those on immunosuppressant medication, chemotherapy, or with certain blood cancers
- People who have already had shingles, since reactivation can happen more than once
We do not recommend Shingrix for people who have had a serious allergic reaction to a previous dose or to any ingredient in the vaccine. We confirm your suitability during your private consultation before any dose is given.
Is paying privately for the shingles vaccine worth it?
This is a practical question many patients raise with us. The full private course of Shingrix at our clinic is £450. For adults aged 50 and over who are licensed to have the vaccine, that cost covers three things:
What your £450 covers
- Direct access to a clinically appropriate, fully planned course of Shingrix
- A pharmacist-led clinical assessment, where we confirm Shingrix is right for you
- Protection against shingles and its possible complications, including post-herpetic neuralgia and rarer complications such as vision problems where the rash affects the eye area
Considerations beyond the sticker price
- Two to four weeks of a painful, blistering rash and nerve pain
- Time off work, since shingles episodes often require a period of rest
- Risk of post-herpetic neuralgia, which can cause ongoing nerve pain
- Rarer but serious complications, including vision problems if the rash affects the eye
- Increased risk of a second episode later in life
Weighed against the potential impact of a shingles episode, many of our patients decide the £450 course is worth it to reduce that risk. For the full clinical overview, see our pillar page on the shingles vaccination in Edinburgh.
