Travel vaccinations in Edinburgh: why the timing matters more than you think

Planning travel vaccinations in Edinburgh — passport and itinerary

Some vaccines need more than one dose, given weeks apart. Others take time to build full protection after a single injection. Hepatitis A gives good short-term protection quickly, but the booster that extends that protection for up to 25 years needs to be given 6 to 12 months later. Rabies requires three doses across 21 days for pre-exposure cover. The point is that the earlier you book, the more options you have, and the more complete your protection will be by the time you board.

That said, travelling at short notice doesn’t mean travelling unprotected. Single-dose vaccines like Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Meningitis ACWY can all be given on the day you visit. If you have two or three weeks before departure, there is still a meaningful amount we can do in that time. The right answer depends on where you’re going and what the specific risks are for your itinerary.

The worst outcome is boarding a flight to a high-risk destination thinking you are covered when you are not. The best outcome is arriving knowing your protection is complete, your certificate is valid, and nothing has been left to chance. That is what a thorough travel health consultation is for, and it is what Edinburgh Vaccination Clinic does every day.

The vaccines available at our Bruntsfield Place clinic

Edinburgh Vaccination Clinic is a designated Yellow Fever centre

Yellow Fever certificate issued at Edinburgh Vaccination Clinic — International Certificate of Vaccination

Edinburgh Vaccination Clinic is a designated Yellow Fever vaccination centre. This means we are formally registered to administer the Yellow Fever vaccine and issue the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis, the official document sometimes called the Yellow Card, that certain countries require you to show at the border. Not every clinic or pharmacy holds this designation. We do, and we issue the certificate at the same appointment as the vaccination, for £75 including certification.

Countries including Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Brazil require this certificate for entry, particularly if you are arriving from another Yellow Fever risk country. If you are travelling to any destination in sub-Saharan Africa or South America, your pharmacist will confirm whether it applies to your specific itinerary. We can vaccinate you and issue the certificate on the same visit. Read our full guide to Yellow Fever vaccination and certification in Edinburgh.

Yellow Fever certificate: what travellers often miss

A record that you have been vaccinated is not the same as a valid certificate. The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis must be issued by a designated centre at the time of vaccination. Edinburgh Vaccination Clinic is a designated Yellow Fever centre. If you receive the Yellow Fever vaccine somewhere that cannot issue this certificate, you may be denied entry at the border.

Coming in: what actually happens

A lot of people put off booking travel vaccinations because they are not sure what to expect or worry it will be complicated. It is not. Book online, arrive at the clinic, and within twenty to thirty minutes you will understand exactly what you need, what it costs, and what happens next. Most vaccines can be given the same day.

Your pharmacist will ask about your destination, your itinerary, your health history, and any vaccines you have had before. Based on that, they give you a clear recommendation. Not a generic list printed from a website, but advice that is specific to your trip, your health, and your timeline. If you need a multi-dose course, they will plan it around your departure date. If you are travelling at short notice, they will tell you honestly what is achievable and make sure you leave as protected as possible.

We have two consultation rooms and usually two pharmacists on-site, so you are rarely waiting long. Bring your itinerary, your vaccination records if you have them, and a list of any regular medications. If you do not have records, we will work from your best recollection and advise accordingly.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Your travel itinerary including all destinations and dates
  • Your vaccination record or Yellow Fever certificate if you have one
  • A list of any regular medications you take
  • Details of any allergies or previous vaccine reactions

Who comes to us, and where from

Most of our patients come from the neighbourhoods immediately surrounding Bruntsfield Place. Marchmont, Morningside, Tollcross, the Meadows, and Newington are our most common catchment areas. We also regularly see patients from the New Town, Old Town, Stockbridge, Leith, Fountainbridge, Grassmarket, Portobello, Polwarth, Barnton, and Greenbank.

Because this is private healthcare, there is no catchment area and no requirement to be registered locally. Many patients who visit us already know Bruntsfield Pharmacy Travel and Health Clinic as their local pharmacy and come to the travel clinic as a natural extension of that relationship. Others travel from across Edinburgh and beyond specifically because appointments are available quickly, often the same day. If you can reach 129 Bruntsfield Place, we can see you.

Questions Edinburgh travellers ask us

How do I book an appointment?

You can book online through our website. Same-day appointments are often available. We have two consultation rooms and usually two pharmacists on-site, so you are rarely waiting long after you arrive.

My trip is in two weeks. Is it too late to get vaccinated?

It is not too late. Several vaccines offer useful protection after a single dose given days before travel. A fortnight is enough time to complete some two-dose courses on an accelerated schedule. Book as soon as possible and your pharmacist will tell you what is achievable before your departure date.

How much will my travel vaccinations cost?

It depends on where you are travelling and which vaccines you need. Hepatitis A is £60, Typhoid is £35, and Rabies is £75 per dose across a three-dose course. All prices are published on our vaccine prices page. There are no hidden consultation fees.

Can I get antimalarials at the same time as my vaccinations?

Yes. Antimalarials including Atovaquone/Proguanil and Doxycycline can be prescribed and dispensed at the same appointment. Your pharmacist will advise which is most appropriate based on your destination and any medications you already take.

Do I need a Yellow Fever certificate for my trip?

It depends on your destination and, in some cases, the countries you have transited through. Several countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South America require a valid Yellow Fever certificate for entry. Edinburgh Vaccination Clinic is a designated Yellow Fever vaccination centre, so we can vaccinate you and issue your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis at the same appointment for £75, including the certificate. Your pharmacist will confirm whether a certificate is required for your itinerary.

Do I need to be registered with a GP in Edinburgh to use the clinic?

No. Private healthcare has no registration requirement. You can visit us regardless of where your GP is, or whether you have a GP at all. No referral is needed.

I’m going to several countries on the same trip. Can you cover all of them?

Yes. Bring your full itinerary to your consultation. Different countries and sometimes different regions within the same country carry different risks, so a multi-destination trip needs to be assessed as a whole rather than country by country in isolation.

Are children’s travel vaccinations available?

Yes. We offer a full range of paediatric doses including Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Twinrix (combined Hepatitis A and B), and Tick-Borne Encephalitis. Bring your child’s vaccination record if you have one and our pharmacist will advise exactly what is needed for your destination.

How long does the consultation take?

It depends on your itinerary. A straightforward single-destination trip can be dealt with quite quickly. A more complex multi-destination itinerary will take longer. The average is around 20 to 30 minutes, including the consultation and any vaccinations given on the day.

Where exactly is Edinburgh Vaccination Clinic?

We are at 129 Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh, EH10 4EQ. The clinic is within walking distance of Bruntsfield, Marchmont, Morningside, and Tollcross, and is well served by buses from across Edinburgh.

I had vaccinations for this destination a few years ago. Do I need them again?

It depends on the vaccine. Some provide long-term or lifelong protection after a full course. Others require boosters after a set number of years. Bring your existing vaccination records and your pharmacist will tell you exactly what is still current and what, if anything, needs to be updated before you travel.

Travel is worth getting right. Edinburgh Vaccination Clinic is here whenever you are ready. Book online and we will take care of the rest.
