Why choose a private travel vaccine clinic in Edinburgh?
Some travel vaccines are available through NHS services, while others are only available privately or through designated travel clinics. A private travel vaccine clinic in Edinburgh can be the more practical option for one or more of the following reasons:
- Scope. Vaccines that the NHS does not fund (yellow fever, rabies, JE, TBE, MenACWY for non-Hajj travel, hepatitis B for travel) are available privately.
- Timing. Same-week appointments are often available, which matters for trips inside the 4 to 8 week window.
- Yellow fever certification. Only designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres can issue the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), and we are designated for this purpose.
- Clinical depth. Every appointment is with an Independent Prescriber pharmacist, with a review of your itinerary, medical history and current medication.
- Single visit. Where appropriate, your travel vaccines and antimalarial advice can be planned and delivered in one consultation.
If you want a wider picture of the vaccines we offer, see our travel vaccines Edinburgh pillar guide.
Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre status
In the UK, yellow fever vaccination can only be administered by clinics that are designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres, registered with the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC). The ICVP that border officials look for can only be issued by these designated centres.
Edinburgh Vaccination Clinic (Bruntsfield Pharmacy) is a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. We administer Stamaril, the only yellow fever vaccine licensed in the UK, and issue the ICVP at your appointment where vaccination is appropriate. For a full guide, see our yellow fever vaccine Edinburgh page.
What to expect at your travel vaccine appointment
Every appointment follows a clear structure, so you know what to expect when you arrive.
Before your appointment
You complete a short pre-appointment travel questionnaire online when you book. It covers your itinerary, medical history, current medication, any prior vaccinations and any specific concerns. The questionnaire goes directly to our Independent Prescriber pharmacist before your visit, which is what allows us to use the appointment time on the consultation itself rather than on paperwork.
During your appointment
You will meet with one of our Independent Prescriber pharmacists in a private consultation. They will:
- Confirm your itinerary, including transit stops and border-entry requirements
- Review your medical history, current medication and any past vaccine reactions
- Discuss which vaccines are recommended, which are required for entry where relevant, and which can reasonably be left out
- Administer the appropriate vaccines on the same visit, where clinically suitable
- Issue your ICVP if yellow fever has been given
- Prescribe antimalarial tablets where indicated
- Provide written aftercare advice and a vaccination record for your own files
- Conduct a short post-vaccination observation period
After your appointment
You leave with the vaccines administered, your ICVP (if applicable), your antimalarial prescription (if applicable), a written vaccination record, and aftercare instructions for the days following your appointment.
